Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary - Introduction –

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1973. It is situated next to Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai to its southeast and close to the protected areas of Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka on its northeast. Bio diversity in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is extensive and is an important part of the rich Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Roads from Ooty, Kozhikode and Mysore link these cities with the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary whereas rails pass at a distance of 110 kilometers from the airport, which is nearest to the sanctuary at Kozhikode. The private accommodations and government rest houses at the sanctuary or accommodations at Mananthavadi or Sultan Bathery are ideal options for accommodation for the visitors who want to explore the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Facts about Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary -

The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve was founded with a particular goal for the conservation of the biological heritage of the region. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is replete with numerous biological entities like the animals, birds, trees and plants. From this sanctuary Pazhassi Raja courageously fought the British.

The administrators at the sanctuary put emphasis on scientific conservation of nature while considering everyday life of the tribals as well as that of the local persons who live in and nearby the sanctuary. Tiger, bison, elephant, wild beer, cheetah and spotted deer are some of the common residents of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest department also takes care of the visitors at the sanctuary in several ways by making arrangements for elephant rides in the sanctuary.

Climate and topography of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary -

The entire expanse of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys a good amount of rainfall, especially between June and August. The months from March to May at the sanctuary are more or less hot. The total expanse of land covered by the sanctuary feature undulations with hillocks situated infrequently here and there in the sanctuary. The highest peak in that area is Karottimala.

Flora and fauna in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary –

Moist deciduous forests cover major portion of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary with some stretches of partial evergreen forests. Plantations of grevelia, eucalyptus and teak comprise 110 square kilometers of area in the sanctuary. Karimaruthi, venteak, maruthi, mazukanjiram, bamboo, chadachi and rosewood are found at the moist deciduous forest whereas Termianalia paniculata, Lagerstroemia, Lanceolata and Veterie indica are abundant at the partly evengreen plots of land.

Monkeys, reptiles (snakes and monitor lizards), panthers, tigers, wild dogs, civet cats, jungle cats, bears, deer and bison dwell in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Cuckoos, peacock, woodpecker, babbler, jungle fowl and owl are common birds at the sanctuary.
