Valley of Flowers

The world famous Valley of Flowers National Park has always made the Himalayan region even more beautiful. This is a national park of Uttarakhand and stretches over a total area of 87.50 km2. It lies on the Zanskar range of the Himalayas and was declared as a national park in the year 1982. The prime reason for this region’s popularity is that it is the home of more than 500 species of flowers. Unique and multi colored flowers are spread all over the area.

The entire area is very well managed. No settlement and grazing in allowed in this national park. Visitors can visit this colorful and beautiful park only during the summer season, between June and October. Rest of the year the area is completely covered by snow; hence, accessibility is a problem.

How to reach the Valley of Flowers

This beautiful location is situated in close proximity to Govindghat. This place can be reached in two ways, either from Rishikesh or from Haldwani. Valley of Flowers is just 3 kilometers away from Govindghat. Tourists can avail either the Rishikesh railway station or the Jolly Grant airport.

Flowers found at Valley of Flowers

Almost in every season you would find different flowers blooming in this region. During the February to June season, the famous Rhododendron arboreum blooms; whereas Primula denticuleta is seen in between the months April and July. Between May to July a number of flower bloom, namely Rosa macrophylla, Lilium oxypetalum, Iris kemaonensis and Fragaria nubicola.

It is during June-August and July-September that this entire land is carpeted with a wide gamut of flowers. Meconopsis aculeate, Hackelia uncinata, Anemone obtusiloba, Rheum australe, Codonopsis viridis, and Epilohium latifolium are some of the species which bloom during June-August. July-September witnesses some of these species, namely Aster albescens, Campanula latitotia, Codonopsis affinis, Nepeta connata, Ligularia amplexicaulis, and Swertia hookeri.

These flowers start blooming just after the snow melts. The colorful flowers of Valley of Flowers bloom in their natural way. Among the wide array of species, some have medicinal qualities as well. This valley remains covered by multi-colored and unique flowers for a period of complete three years.

Accommodation at Valley of Flowers National Park

The forest rest house is the best place to halt. One can take pleasure of the comfortable accommodation as well as the picturesque beauty surrounding the location. Food can be easily availed at the roadside restaurants at Ghangharia.
