Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary – Introduction –

Soaring cliffs and constricted valleys at the Aravallis, India, comprise major parts of Sariska, the forests of which are deciduous and arid. The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, on this land, is home to remnants of ancient temples of Garh-Rajor, which were built during the 10th and 11 centuries.

A historic castle from the 17th century atop a pointed hill in Kankwari, offers a wide-ranging view of eagles and Egyptian vultures that fly over the area. In 1955 the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary was established and was turned into a National Park in 1979.

Wildlife attractions in Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary –

Many carnivores like jungle cats, wild dogs, hyenas, leopards, tigers and jackals have their home at the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. Their prey and their food include the wildlife species of chital, chausingha, nilgai, langur and wild boar. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is widely popular for the extensive number of Rhesus monkeys, which reside nearby Talvrikish.

Birdlife at Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is also rich and varied. Birds here comprise Grey Partridge, Sand Grouse, Tree Pie, Bush Quail, Great Indian Horned Owl, Peafowl, Crested Serpent Eagle and wood pecker with golden back.

Historic attractions in Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary –

Historic temples of Shiva – Ruin of the Neelkanth temples, which were built in between the 6th century AD and the 13th century AD are located at Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a major attraction for the visitors in the sanctuary.

The Kanwari Fort - The historic Kanwari Fort is also sited within the sanctuary. Dara Shikoh was once held captive in this fort by Aurangzeb, a famous Mughal Emperor.

The Palace – Sariska was earlier popular as the imperial resident of the Alwar kings. The palace at Sariska was constructed by Alwar’s Maharajas.

How to visit Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary –

The airport nearest to Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is at Jaipur within 107 kilometers of the sanctuary. The nearest railway station to the sanctuary is sited at Alwar. From Delhi the sanctuary is 200 kilometers away. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is also linked will Alwar. Bus services from Jaipur and Delhi are offered regularly to Alwar. The Forest Reception Office, which is situated on Jaipur Road, also makes arrangements for jeeps that take the visitors to the sanctuary. The best time to visit Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is between the months of October and June.
