The Nanda Devi National Park is one of the most sought after national parks in the state of Uttarakhand. Year 1982 saw the establishment of this national park, around the peak of Nanda Devi. It was in the year 1988 that UNESCO designated this area as World Heritage Site. Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve is well known for encompassing two major parks of India, the Valley of Flowers National Park and the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
The uniqueness of this beautiful area lies in the fact that it is surrounded by several peaks, ranging from 6,000 meters to 7,500 meters height. Along with peaks, Nanda Devi National Park also encompasses the Rishi Ganga Gorge. In total, it covers an area of 630.33 km2.
Traveling to Nanda Devi National Park
The area of Nanda Devi National Park is located at almost 280 kilometers away from Rishikesh. Travelers can visit this national park between 1st May and 31st October, after that it remains close for the next six months. While touring Nanda Devi National Park, a maximum of five members are allowed in one particular group.
Only two groups are given the permission of touring in a day. Children above the age of 14 years are allowed to enter this park. The travelers are always accompanied by a special guide and it is mandatory for one and all to abide by the rules. In addition, travelers are checked thoroughly before they are allowed for the trip. Peaks present in and around Nanda Devi National Park
The surrounding peaks divide the entire area into outer and inner sanctuary area. Within the sanctuary one would find the Devistan I, II, Rishi Kot and Nanda Devi peaks. On the walls of this sanctuary there are numerous peaks, namely Trisul I, II, III, Nanda Devi East, Dunagiri, Rishi Pahar, Changabang and Deo Damla. The peaks lying outside this sanctuary are also of great prominence. Some of them are Nanda Ghunti, Hardeol, Nanda Kot and Trishuli.
The Rishi Gorge
In the interior part of this sanctuary, the Rishi Ganga begins. It crosses Rishi Gorge, which gets separated into two sections, the upper and lower gorge. In comparison, the lower gorge is steeper than the upper gorge. Along with this the diverse floras and faunas of Nanda Devi National Park make this place worth visiting.
