Corbett National Park

The oldest and most popular national park of India, Jim Corbett National Park, was named after a well-known naturalist and hunter, Jim Corbett. Formerly, the Corbett National Park was referred to as Hailey National Park. It is located in Nainital, a district in Uttarakhand, in the Northern part of India.

Geography of Corbett National Park

In geographical terms, this park is situated between 29°25' to 29°39'N latitude and 78°44' to 79°07'E longitude. Besides the sloppy regions, Corbett National Parks has several streams, ravines, Doons, plateaus as well as ridges. Even the Patli Dun valley is also located within the area of this park.

Climate at Jim Corbett National Park

Temperate climate prevails in the park because of the vast stretch of greenery. During the winter season the temperature varies from 5 oC to 30 oC. However, the temperature rises above 40 oC during summer seasons. Rainfall is heavy during the monsoons.

Flora of Jim Corbett National Park

This area of 521 km2 encompasses 488 varied species of plants. Sal forests have a much higher density of trees than the Anogeissus-Acacia catechu forests. Apart from Sal, you would also find communities of Jamun, Mallotus philippensis and Diospyros tomentosa.

Fauna of Jim Corbett National Park

The faunas found in Jim Corbett National Park are diverse. Species of birds are the maximum, ranging up to 585 different varieties. There are also 7 species of fishes, 33 species of reptiles, 37 species of dragonflies and 7 species of amphibians. The world famous Bengal tigers are the pride of Corbett National Park. Some of the other animals that can be seen in this national park are Grey Mongoose, Himalayan Black bears, Jungle Cat, Indian pangolins, different varieties of deer, crocodiles and Nightjars.

Ecotourism in Jim Corbett National Park

This national park is a well-known ecotourism destination. However, it has been facing tremendous threats, mainly due to the rise in number of tourists. Government is taking due measures for proper management of the forested land as well as the wellbeing of the wildlife. One of the prime objectives of this popular wildlife destination in India is to protect the endangered Bengal Tigers.

Nature guides are being trained by government for better protection of this land and its creatures. International tourists would enjoy Jim Corbett’s climate during winters; whereas, the Indians should opt for the summer season. Protecting the faunas, floras as well as the forested area is the responsibility of the inhabitants and tourists, as much as it is of the government.
