Introduction to Sun Temple in Konark

The splendid temple architecture of the Orissa based Sun Temple in Konark came into existence in the reign of the King Narasimhadeva in 13th century. This temple represents the appearance of a colossal chariot having 7 horses and 12 wheels which carry the Sun God who is a popular deity of India dating back to the Vedic era. Presently this temple in its ruins has managed to reflect the architectural genius of 13th century. Konark also known as Konaditya is derived form Kona that means a Corner and Arka – Sun. In fact Konark is also recognized as Arkakshetra.

This temple being the pride of Orissa is also known as the Black Pagoda and its ruins were excavated in 19th century. According to the legends the king of Krishna and Jambavati, Samba was cursed by Krishna with leprosy as he entered his wife’s bathing chamber and Samba could only be relieved through worshipping of Lord Surya or Sun God. The Kalapahad invasion of Orissa in 1508 supports the theory of the fall of Konark temple. Kalapahad who had already destroyed all temples in Orissa found it difficult to destroy the Sun Temple in Konark as stonewalls, being 25 feet thick approximately were impenetrable to some extent. Hence Kalapahad displaced the Dadhinauti also known as the arch stone, which resulted in the collapse of the temple.
