Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This is a 7th century port city in India. Mahabalipuram was built by the kings of Pallavas dynasty. The temples of Mahabalipuram are the rock cut temples. These are also monolithic temples built carving out a piece of rock. The rock cut temples of Mahabalipurm are specimens of the early period Dravidian architecture. One may also find some Budhist elements in the architectural pattern of Mahabalipuram.

The Shore Temple
This is a temple built just on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. This temple has its entrance on the western side of the temple. The structure of this temple has been recently revealed after the recent excavation. The temple on the shore was re-built after the excavation.

Varaha Cave Temple
This is a very small rock-cut temple. This temple was built during the 7th century. Arjuna's Penance is a sculpture which depicts an episode from the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Thirukadalmallai
This temple is built to praise Lord Vishnu. The kings of the Pallava dynasty built this temple to guard the sculptures of Mahabalipuram from the hands of ocean.

The vivid sea and the line of Casuarina trees by the side of the Bay of Bengal make this place really wonderful. Different kinds of handicrafts are made in the nearby villages of Mahabalipuram. Festivals in Mahabalipuram

Every year the department of Tourism in Tamilnadu organizes a dance festival in Mahabalipuram.
